Introduction to Wythenshawe Rail Action Group – WRAG (revised Dec 2011)

Wythenshawe Railway Action Group (WRAG) consists of a group of residents of Wythenshawe who have been campaigning since 2008 to get a rail station opened at Baguley, where the new Metrolink (under construction) crosses the railway on Southmoor Road en route to Manchester Airport.

A regular commuter train service has been running from Chester to Manchester via Stockport for the past 20 years but it is unable to stop at Wythenshawe because of the absence of a rail station.

The site at Baguley is ideal because it is close to Wythenshawe Hospital (which has limited car parking) but gets hundreds of thousands of visitors each year who will be able to travel there by train from all over the country when the station is opened and a frequent tram service passes by the station to take them onward.

It is also adjacent to the new Enterprise Zone on the Roundthorn Estate wich will attract many thousands more workers. The new Medical Academy is nearby so that students will not have to rely on buses to get about.

Wythenshawe has a population of 72,000 and is nearly 100 years old. It is also one of the largest towns in Europe without a railway station. The introduction of an interlinking tram and train commuter service will help transform Wythenshawe and bring it into the 21st century with a modern high speed public transport system which it has needed for so many years. It will take many polluting cars off the roads around, which are some of the most congested in the UK!

UPDATE - DEC 2011
Progress:
Since starting our campaign in 2008 the Greater Manchester Transport Authority have recently included the Baguley Railway Station in its latest policy document. We have had great support from our MP and many councillors,but we still need to maintain public support for our campaign!

Raise more support:
There are still hurdles to overcome but we have progressed a long way in the past three years. We believe that it is time to raise the tempo of our campaign, especially amongst young people at school or who work in Wythenshawe and other workers and visitors to Wythenshawe.
